To celebrate National Afternoon Tea Week, we're taking a step back and looking at the timeless ritual of afternoon tea. Join us as we journey through the rich history of afternoon tea, a delightful custom that has graced our hotel with its presence for generations.
The origins of Afternoon Tea
The story of afternoon tea dates back to early 19th century England, attributed to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. In an era when it was fashionable to eat only two main meals a day—breakfast and a late dinner—Anna found herself feeling peckish during the long hours between lunch and dinner. To curb her hunger, she began requesting a pot of tea and a light snack of bread and butter, which she would enjoy privately in her chambers.
Anna's indulgence soon caught on among her social circle, and afternoon tea became a fashionable social event among the aristocracy. It wasn't long before other socialites and hostesses adopted the practice, transforming it into an opportunity to showcase their finest china, silverware, and culinary skills. The tradition evolved to include a variety of delicacies such as scones with clotted cream and jam, dainty finger sandwiches, and an assortment of pastries and cakes—all served with a selection of fine teas.
