Discover the magic of North Devon this Winter

Crisp coastal walks, peaceful beaches, cosy afternoons, hearty Devon food and some of North Devon’s most beautiful landscapes without the summer crowds - there’s something rather special about escaping to North Devon in winter.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Barnstaple, The Imperial Hotel makes a wonderful base for a winter break. Spend your days discovering coast, countryside, gardens and charming towns before returning to the warmth and comfort of the hotel for a relaxing evening.

If you’re planning a winter getaway, here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy North Devon during the cooler months.

Wrap Up For a Winter Walk

There’s nothing quite like stepping outside on a crisp winter morning and exploring North Devon on foot. The cooler months bring a wonderful sense of peace to the countryside, with quieter paths and beautiful seasonal scenery.

From Barnstaple, you can easily join the Tarka Trail, which follows the Taw Estuary towards Fremington, Instow and beyond. Choose a gentle stroll before returning to town, or make a day of it and explore more of the trail by foot or bicycle.

For something a little wilder, head towards Exmoor National Park. Winter transforms the moor into an atmospheric landscape of rolling hills, wooded valleys and open countryside – perfect for pulling on your walking boots and embracing the fresh Devon air.

Discover North Devon's Beaches without the crowds

North Devon's beaches aren't just for summer. In fact, we think there's something particularly beautiful about them in winter.

Wrap up warm and head to Saunton Sands, Croyde or Westward Ho! for a bracing walk beside the Atlantic. With fewer visitors, miles of sand and dramatic winter skies, it’s a completely different way to experience our coastline.

Afterwards, find a cosy café for something warm before heading back to The Imperial to settle in for the evening.

Explore RHS Garden Rosemoor

A garden might not be the first place that springs to mind for a winter day out, but RHS Garden Rosemoor is beautiful throughout the seasons.

Located near Great Torrington, the garden remains open throughout winter and its dedicated Winter Garden brings together colourful stems, evergreens and seasonal planting.

During the festive season, Rosemoor also traditionally hosts a programme of seasonal events and illuminations, making it well worth checking what's on when planning your stay.

Enjoy a Little Shopping in Barnstaple

You don't have to travel far to enjoy a relaxed winter afternoon. Step outside the hotel and spend some time discovering Barnstaple itself.

Browse the town's independent shops before visiting the historic Barnstaple Pannier Market, where you can discover local traders, produce, crafts and gifts beneath the market's impressive Victorian roof.

It's particularly lovely in the run-up to Christmas when the town takes on a wonderfully festive feel.

Escape to Exmoor

Make a flask, pack your warmest coat and set off for a winter drive across Exmoor.

The national park is within easy reach of Barnstaple and makes a wonderful day trip from The Imperial. Explore picturesque villages, stop for a traditional pub lunch and take in sweeping views across the moor.

On a clear winter day, the combination of open countryside, crisp air and peaceful surroundings makes it feel like a true escape from everyday life.

Explore North Devon’s Villages

Winter is also a lovely time to slow down and discover some of the smaller places that give North Devon so much character.

Take a drive towards Instow and Appledore, wander along the waterfront, browse local shops and galleries and stop for coffee or a leisurely lunch. Without the bustle of the summer months, there's plenty of opportunity to simply explore at your own pace.

You could also combine your visit with a walk along the Tarka Trail or around the Taw and Torridge estuaries.

Make the Most of a Rainy Day

Of course, this is Devon - so a little rain is always possible!

A grey winter's day is the perfect excuse to explore Barnstaple's museums, shops and cafés, or simply embrace a slower pace back at the hotel. There’s no rule that says every day of a winter break needs to be packed with sightseeing.

Sometimes an afternoon spent lingering over tea, reading a book or enjoying a drink while the weather does its thing outside is exactly what a winter escape should be.

Return to the Warmth of The Imperial

After a day exploring North Devon, head back to The Imperial Hotel and leave the cold outside.

Settle into the elegant surroundings of the hotel, enjoy a drink and relax before dinner. The Arlington Restaurant offers an opportunity to make the evening part of the experience too, with fine dining in beautiful surroundings.

Then retire to your room, sink into bed and enjoy knowing there's no rush in the morning.
